A typical home warranty could include an appliance-only plan, a system-only plan, or a comprehensive plan. 
Appliance plans cover essential appliances such as built-in microwaves, clothes washers and dryers, garbage disposals, refrigerators, and ovens. Systems plans protect built-in systems, such as air conditioning, ductwork, electrical, plumbing, and water heaters. With comprehensive plans, you receive protection for both systems and appliances. 
Home warranties also cover appliance components that ensure the normal operation of your appliances. For example, home warranties typically include coverage for your gas stove’s pilot light. However, a home warranty won’t cover your stove’s knob dials or other cosmetic components.
You can buy home appliance insurance at any stage during homeownership. However, you should purchase home appliance insurance when you notice your equipment is beginning to age—not after it starts experiencing problems. Conlin says, “You need to have a home warranty prior to having a problem with a system or appliance for the coverage to kick in. In fact, most home warranty companies have at least a 30-day waiting period before you can make a claim.”

Based on our research, the average cost for basic to comprehensive home warranty coverage ranges from $546–$774 per year or $46 to $65 monthly. Pricing varies based on each company, coverage options, and geographic location.

However, your costs could also include add-on protection, as many companies offer secondary and luxury appliance coverage. In fact, appliance protection is a popular add-on option for home warranty coverage. We surveyed 1,000 home warranty policyholders and asked which add-on options they prioritized. Our findings revealed that 41% of homeowners choose add-on coverage specifically for secondary appliance coverage. Depending on the chosen coverage, the add-on could increase your monthly cost by $3–$20.
Your monthly costs are usually the most expensive factor when buying a home appliance warranty, but the following added fees can raise your costs:
  • Cancellation fee: If you cancel a contract before it expires, you’ll most likely have to pay an early termination fee. Meenan says reputable providers include a 30-day free cancellation period when you sign up. However, most providers charge a cancellation fee if you cancel after 30 days. The average fee for cancellations after 30 days of coverage is $75, but it can range between $25 and $90, depending on the company.
  • Enrollment fees: Check with your potential home warranty provider to determine if it requires a one-time enrollment fee upon signing up.
  • Service call fee: You pay this fee when a service technician comes to your house to inspect a broken system or appliance. Service fees usually range between $75 and $125. Most providers charge one service call fee per visit, but others may charge by the number of repairs completed during one visit.

LHG provides three service plan options: Appliance Guard, Systems Guard, and Total Home Guard. After reviewing the LHG sample contract, we learned that two plans, Appliance Guard and Total Home Guard, include appliances in their base coverage. LHG provides a $2,000 appliance coverage limit, aligning with the industry coverage standard. The company doesn’t offer coverage for secondary appliances in its baseline coverage. All repairs include a 60-day workmanship guarantee.

Below is an overview of LHG’s coverage plans:

  • Appliance Guard: This plan includes coverage for nine appliances, such as clothes dryers, dishwashers, and washing machines.

Our Experience With Liberty Home Guard

When we read LHG customer reviews, we noticed many customers complimented the company for its efficient customer support line. We called the LHG customer support line during secret shopping to test the experience—our call connected to an LHG representative in under 30 seconds. 

We also tested LHG’s live chat service, which is unique for a home company. Although the chat connected immediately, we interacted with an automated bot. It required two requests to speak with a live agent before we were transferred.

We also explored the LHG website for details on its appliance coverage. We learned that the company offers clear information about its coverage and exclusions in both the sample contracts and Plans and Policies section of its website. However, details about coverage caps are only outlined in the sample contract.

AHS provides three plans: ShieldSilver, ShieldGold, and ShieldPlatinum. We read the AHS sample contract and learned that it doesn’t offer an appliance-only plan option, unlike other providers, including LHG and Select. Instead, it bundles appliance coverage with home systems under the ShieldGold and ShieldPlatinum plans. The company will cover up to $2,000 per appliance in the ShieldGold plan, which matches LHG’s coverage caps. However, AHS doubles its coverage limit to $4,000 per appliance with the ShieldPlatinum Plan, making it the second-highest appliance coverage in this review behind First American. AHS includes a 30-day workmanship guarantee with its repairs.

AHS also covers unknown preexisting conditions, improper installation or modification, and items damaged by rust and corrosion. Most home warranty providers exclude these conditions from their standard coverage.

Here’s a look at AHS’s coverage plans:

  • ShieldSilver: This plan focuses on major home systems, such as heating, cooling, and electrical. 
  • ShieldGold: The next plan includes major systems and appliances, such as built-in microwaves, garbage disposals, and ovens.

AHS only offers comprehensive plans, so they cost slightly more than other providers in this review. While creating an online quote on its website, we could choose between a $100 or $125 service call fee. Our monthly plan rates lowered when we chose the higher service call fee. AHS is also the only provider in this review that offers monthly plans. Other providers, including AFC Home Warranty and LHG, offer annual and monthly options.

AHS offers a limited add-on catalog with only six options. Most reviewed providers provide eight or more, on average. Of its six add-ons, none of them have additional appliance protections. AHS also excludes coverage for secondary appliances and stand-alone items such as freezers.

Our team member filed an AHS home warranty claim to test the process. After submitting the claim online, he received text and email confirmations immediately. Within just five minutes, AHS had scheduled a service appointment for the next day. The technician took only two hours to complete the repairs. The only out-of-pocket cost was the service call fee. Our tester was pleased with the service and the promptness of the claims process.

The AHS site is easy to navigate and provides clear details on appliance coverage limits for each plan. Under the Plans & Coverage section, we found details for each plan, including associated plans, coverage limits, annual aggregate limits, and coverage breakdown for each appliance. The site also clearly details its inclusions and exclusions and provides a convenient link to its sample contract.

We noted in Select’s sample contract that its Bronze Care and Platinum Care plans cover appliances such as exhaust fans and washing machines. The Platinum Care plan adds major systems coverage. Based on the fine print we read, Select is’t ideal for covering older appliances. Its $500 coverage limit is the lowest of all providers in this article and falls well below the industry standard. Consider Select if you’re on a tight budget and need baseline appliance protection for newer items.

Here are more details about Select’s plans:

  • Bronze Care: This appliance-only plan includes essential appliances such as cooktops, garbage disposals, and refrigerators.

However, add-on items only receive a $400 coverage cap, falling below other providers, including LHG and AHS. Select offers only one appliance add-on option: stand-alone freezer coverage for an additional $3.33 monthly. Additional add-on options include the following items:

Our Experience With Select Home Warranty

We spoke with Select’s customer service team and gained useful insights into its business practices. The company prefers handling most plan issues and claims processing over the phone. We also learned that Select dispatches technicians from its approved network. However, if no network technicians are available locally, Select allows you to choose your repair person, pending company approval first.

Unfortunately, we found the Select website offers limited information on its appliance coverage. Covered appliances are listed, but it doesn’t offer details on exclusions or coverage caps. Select also doesn’t offer these details during the quote process. We recommend reviewing a provider’s full sample contract and policies in detail before signing up for service.

First American offers three plan options: the Starter Plan, Essential Plan, and Premium Plan. We read through First American’s sample contract and discovered that each plan includes combined coverage for appliances and systems. This means you can’t choose an appliance-only plan like you can with Select or LHG. In addition, First American doesn’t cover some essential home appliances in every plan like other providers. For example, you can’t choose the cheaper Starter Plan if you need coverage for a clothes washer or dryer. Instead, you’ll need to pay more for the Essential or Premium Plan. Preexisting conditions aren’t covered in First American’s standard coverage as AHS does, but you can add the First American Upgrade to the Essential and Premium plans for these protections.

Here are more details about First American’s plans:

  • Starter Plan: This includes coverage for some essential appliances and systems, such as built-in microwaves, heating systems, and refrigerators. 
  • Essential Plan: This includes Starter Plan coverage and adds more essential items, including air conditioning and clothes washers and dryers. 
  • Premium Plan: The highest tier includes Essential Plan coverage and adds luxury appliances, roof leaks, and window air conditioning units.

Similar to AHS, First American provides flexible service call fees. We used First American’s quote tool and learned that you can choose from a $75, $100, or $125 service call fee. Your premium will increase or decrease depending on your selected service call fee. First American charges a $2 processing fee if you choose monthly premiums. It removes the fee with an annual premium. We haven’t found a fee like this with any other received provider.

Our Experience With First American Home Warranty

Our team member filed a claim with First American to fix a broken garage door opener. After submitting the claim online on a Friday, he received a text within 30 minutes confirming his technician assignment. The technician promptly contacted him to schedule a repair visit for the upcoming Monday. The service technician completed the less than 30-minute repair quickly. Our team member only paid the service call fee for his visit.

Similar to Select’s website, First American’s doesn’t disclose details concerning its coverage caps or exclusions. Instead, we could only find information about the covered appliances and limited plan details. When we selected the “Compare Plans” button, we were redirected to the online quote tool.
